The Patriot League was established in 1986 as a Division I-AA football conference, however five years later, in 1990, the conference expanded to become an all-sports conference. The Naval Academy was added to the Patriot League in their inaugural 2008 season. Currently seven of the eight Patriot League schools field a women’s lacrosse team, along with associate women’s lacrosse member Villanova. The conference is thus composed of the following schools: American, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Villanova and Navy. While the Patriot league is not granted an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, they are a potential play-in conference. Each year the NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse committee uses RPI statistics from the current season to determine which two conference champions will participate in a play-in game to advance to the NCAA tournament. |
